Self-Assessment

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and Commissioner’s Regulations §100.21(5)(b)(xviii) require that all public schools and districts be included in the state accountability system. For schools and districts for which the New ¶¶Òõapp ¶¶Òõapp Education Department (¶¶Òõapp) cannot make an accountability status determination based on state accountability measures, a self-assessment of the academic program must be done. This requirement pertains to the following:

  1. Schools/districts with any configuration of Grades K through 12 that do not participate in the regular state assessment program;
  2. Schools/districts for which ¶¶Òõapp cannot compute a Weighted Average Achievement Level for the All Students accountability subgroup because there are fewer than 30 results for continuously enrolled students;
  3. Schools/districts for which ¶¶Òõapp can compute only a Weighted Average Achievement Level for the All Students accountability subgroup but cannot compute levels for all other measures.

For self-assessment purposes, results for all available students in the school will be used to make an accountability status determination if there are fewer than 30 continuously enrolled student results combined for ELA and mathematics for the elementary-middle level and ELA, mathematics, and science for high school level.

Questions related to self-assessment can be sent to selfassessment@nysed.gov.
